Cambridge University Press, Published: 2000. Author(s): Richard Walton & Mark Bartram Level: Advanced Components: Student’s Book, Teacher’s Book, Class Cassette. Review received 03.03.
Details or Reviewer - Ten years experience, has taught all levels throughout career, used this course book twice.
Best things about this course: The layout is reasonable and logical – easy to follow for teachers and students. Mostly eye-catching enough but not always dynamic. Variety of approaches to the study of lexis/collocations etc. This is particularly impressive. Topics of readings and listenings moderately interesting. I personally liked ‘Origins of Policing’ Unit 4 p 3. Pronunciation practice is fairly thorough offering a good range of practice. Discussion prompts are OK but not always ‘virile’ – 6.1 on money was very nice. Grammar – good for revision and clear on points but not challenging - not a lot of new information to process or new ways of looking at and extending upper intermediate knowledge.
Dislikes: Slight inconsistency in range of difficulty – p 36 3.6 text rather easy versus 4.10 listening quite hard. Not a lot of input in driving the students forwards, more emphasis on consolidation yet the book’s mission statement refers to “building on upper intermediate….first step into advanced” even so more challenges might be useful.
Teacher’s book? OK (probably very useful for a new teacher) but could have offered more possible correct answers especially regarding reported speech.
Workbook, accompanying cassette/CD? There is no workbook and it is not a big problem.
‘Unique selling points’ Mostly its lexical components and clear layout.
Summary: In general it is not the most imaginative advanced book for example Unit 5 on the subject of food yet again – students have had this topic in every book at every level – but I would use it again. It is not a first choice for me but a good standby if other books can’t be used for some reason – it might prove nice for an upper intermediate group who are seeking a push – it is OK for early advanced and beyond but the teacher should be prepared to add in a little of their own complexity – in such instances the book becomes a consolidation tool mostly.
