Oxford University Press, Published: 2002. Author(s): Simon Haines Level: Advanced Components: Student’s Book, Teacher’s Book, Class Cassette/CD, Student Cassette, CAE Study Pack. Review received 03.03.
Details or Reviewer - 16 years experience, has used course for six weeks, it is the first time he has used it and he has reached unit 7 out of 18 units. He is teaching young adults of different nationalities in an EFL school in Bournemouth.
Best things about this course: Interesting reading texts – p20-21, p24-25, p38-39. The level of the listening texts is appropriate for advanced students. The way the topics are more thought provoking than usual – although this can be a disadvantage with certain nationalities.
Dislikes: The listening texts are generally too short. There is a heavy vocabulary load – especially collocations – and it needs to be recycled more than it is. The course does not deal with pronunciation in enough length or detail. Some of the reading texts could be better exploited (p38-39). The ‘exploring natural speech’ sections could be better developed.
Teacher’s book? The teacher’s book is not very useful.
Workbook, accompanying cassette/CD? Very useful but felt that the reading texts and some of the listening texts could have been exploited a lot more.
General Feels the course needs supplementing especially in the areas of grammar practice and communicative activities to practice the grammar. Compared to other advanced level general English course books there was a good variety of topics which were thought provoking but on the whole this course doesn’t stand out as anything special. The students liked the intensive reading texts and some of them liked some of the topics and communicative activities (p38 ‘read and discuss’). However they are a bit overwhelmed by the amount of vocabulary and especially the collocations and have had mixed reactions to certain topics such as ‘isms’(p10) and ‘senses’ (unit 7). Units can become tedious if not supplemented from other sources.
Quote “I feel it would benefit from a resource book containing some communicative activities to practise some of the grammar and some of the expressions introduced as with Cutting Edge or Reward. There could be more variation with the organisation of units as they tend to follow a similar pattern and become a bit predictable and tedious if not supplemented. While this book is no worse than most other advanced books it doesn’t stand out, to me, as being vastly better than them.” Reship please add:(Copy from:sinoec.net)
