REVIEW on Zabadoo 2
Useful to teach the characteristic English rhythm to new pupils.
WHAT IS ZABADOO 2 ?
Zabadoo 2 is part of a three-level course for teaching English to pupils who have studied English for one year. The name Zabadoo is derived from the friendly genie of the same name who guides pupils through a host of activities designed to teach them basic structures and vocabulary.
WHAT ARE THE COURSE COMPONENTS?
The course comprises
a. a 96-page classbook containing songs, chants, cartoons, stories, plays and other activities;
b. two cassettes with recordings of nearly all the above activities;
c. a Teacher’s Book which provides exhaustive lesson notes. It also contains ideas for additional activities and cross-curricular projects;
d. a Teacher’s Resource Pack containing 80 flash cards that are used to present and practice key vocabulary, and a weather poster.
SCHEME OF THE BOOK
Zabadoo 2 contains six units besides five special activities and a wordlist. The first section "Welcome Back !" recapitulates the letters of the alphabet and familiarises pupils with the characters found in Zabadoo 1. Each unit is 14 pages long and centres around themes like animals, mealtimes, shopping etc. The activities in each unit aim to familiarise pupils with basic terms connected to the theme.
The first unit on animals has pictures of six animals, a chant which has names of animals and verbs connected with movement, cartoons, songs, puzzles and activities - all with animals as their theme. A special section in each unit is Will’s Website which " outlines various aspects of daily life in Britain. " This section features lavish photographs in full colour and the photographs, needless to say, are based on the theme of the unit in which they occur.
MERITS
The resource pack follows the multi-media approach by integrating text, pictures and sound to impart effective instruction to pupils. The quality of production of the book is superb. The paper, print and illustrations are extremely good and make the resource pack a pleasure to use. The highlight of the course is the set of two audiocassettes. I might confess here that I had originally intended to listen to about one side of a cassette in order to write my review. However, I ended up listening to the entire tapes while Simultaneously reading the relevant portion in the classbook.
The first thing about the audiocassettes that strikes the listener is the superb sound effects (SFX). These include transitional music, ambience sounds and background music. In the section of the tapes dealing with places to eat, music of the country associated with a particular type of restaurant is played. Thus the description of an Indian restaurant is preceded by the strains from a sitar.
The clear melodious chants and songs are a pleasure to hear and would help children learn the sounds of the English language while giving them a feel of its characteristic rhythm. Constant repetition serves to reinforce what has already been taught. The tapes also help adult Indian learners know the correct pronunciation of some common English words.
The section on special activities is unique as it integrates the songs, chants and words that pupils have learnt in earlier units. There are a number of photocopiable tests to test pupils on all four language skills - LSRW. Reship please add：(Copy from：sinoec.net)
