The phrase "Made in China" has long been famous, but recently, a new slogan is poised to gain public attention: "Designed in China." That’s because China is starting to become a fashion hub, having recently hosted the China International Fashion Week, which featured 25 fashion shows with clothing by domestic designers. The movement shows that Western fashion standards aren’t the only norm for what’s fashionable, as Chinese designers have their own ideas about what constitutes beauty. Original design becomes mainstream "Design is crucial for the Chinese fashion industry, (in terms of) turning from a manufacturing nation to an original design nation," said Wang Qing, chairman of the Chinese Designer Association. He stated that original design is the most important factor for Chinese fashion to step onto the world stage. A famous designer, Deng Yuping, believes that nowadays Chinese designers are not only pursuing visual stimulation, but gradually finding their own styles and tastes of design. For example, the works of Sun Xiuqin, a designer from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, draw strong inspiration from western China.
Chinese elements become the highlight Chinese characters, printing , patterns, and other Chinese elements are skillfully incorporated into clothing design. Designer Zeng Fengfei adopts shadow play and characters into her works, using printing and bright colors to express happiness. Designer Liu Wei finds inspiration in flowers. A dress she released this year was largely made of printed calico, with a blue and white pattern, expressing Asian elegance. More and more Chinese designers are pursuing native Chinese costumes in their fashion design. Chinese design: deep accumulation leads to speedy development Designer Wen Bo, who has released some of his work at the Milan International Fashion Week, said in his opinion, most designers understand the principle of combining eastern and western themes in their clothing designs, as well as ancient and modern elements. He noted that such traditional Chinese design themes as the phoenix, dragons, and the color red are not well integrated into fashion by domestic designers, whom he said ought to incorporate these traditional elements into their work. Wan Jiamin, a press-photographer who always focuses on the development of Chinese fashion, said that cultural creativity is very important to fashion design: designers should understand the long history and culture of Chinese fashion, and then creatively express them in their designs. He said the work of designers is not only creating clothing, but also expressing culture and different tastes. During the recently ended China International Fashion Week, young talents took the center stage. Nowadays, designers born in the 1980s are in vogue. Ding Ziyang, born in 1984, who received a Silver Medal award in the "Jeans west Casual Clothes Design Competition," is still a student in Hong Kong. The first-place winner, Xiao Zefeng, Japanese born in 1986, is studying at the Paris International Fashion & Art College of Shanghai University; the Cuprum Medal winner, Moran Dahan, who is studying at Manchester Metropolitan University in the U.K., was also born in the 1980s.
